Thank you Victoria!

We are once again overwhelmed by the support that EoD receives from the community. Here's one example of a letter that was recently aired on CBC radio in Victoria.

"Hi Gregor,

Re: Roller derby event Victoria's “Eves of Destruction” vs. Edmonton's “Oil City Derby Girls”.

I just wanted to let you know that I thank you guys at CBC for having the interview with the girls from the “Eves of Destruction” roller derby team on Friday. CBC initiated the “legitimization” of roller derby in my mind and it's because of the interview that I ended up taking in this event with my family. What I had envisioned was a flash-back to the rockem'-sockem' wrestling type roller derbies from my youth in the 70's and I wanted to expose my daughter to something different that I took in when I was her age. All the male-dominated sporting events don't really interest her so cheering on something like this seemed like an event worth checking out. Yes there was the campiness etc. that the sport portrays and the crowds are not only drawn to but also participate in – all in good fun. However, the fishnet, piercings and tattoos are really façades for what turned out to be a rather strong desire on the part of each team to win within legitimate rules and the girls to put in to practice their conviction of perfecting their athletic skills. Once I got refamiliarized with the rules I was really into observing the techniques of the Blockers, Pivots and Jammers, all the while seeing if the referees were picking up all the infractions etc. The hits, wipe-outs and bruises were all very real unlike those pathetic soccer “injuries” seen in international competitions by overpaid so-called “stars”. These girls have regular jobs with personal responsibilities and I know that they use up their holidays and family-related days to entertain us here and the hosts cities where they also compete, something that most of us in the crowd can totally relate to. The crowd was well behaved and it truly was an all-ages event. This is a worth-while, local community and most importantly, amateur group of girls that I would recommend you to witness for yourselves. To see everything at floor-level and to have the occasional crash right in front of you, isn't something you see everyday and I hope that this exciting event won't be a victim of its own success in the future. CBC did well in getting the representatives on the air and I hope you will support them again in the future!

Gord Hutchings

p.s. I have no connection with anyone involved in the sport but definitely will go again."

Thank you to all our sponsors, friends, family and the community for your continued support. See you at the next bout!
